Let it snow!

We've been really lucky with the weather up here in Derry.  It's only snowed three times this week and each time it's just been a dusting, but of course because of the sub-zero temperatures it hasn't thawed at all.  The roads are fine for the most part, the pavements are a bit scary, especially as it's all downhill to town from our house, but they've managed to keep the schools open and shops are well stocked.

The weather has had somewhat of an effect on us in Derry though - the Foyle has started to freeze over.  Apparantly it's only the third time in a century it's happened.  It's so strange to see huge sheets of ice floating down the river (sometimes with birds perched on top too!).

Pics were taken by BFs Dad  yesterday.

I also can't get over the effect the weather has had on the trees here.  The snow has frozen onto the branches and trunks and not even gravity is having an effect on them.  It looks like someone has sprayed white glitter paint over everything - it's so beautiful!

You can see the sparkly trees in the background.

I do realise that we're very lucky to be able to enjoy this cold weather, whilst others across the UK are having such trouble with it.  It isn't affecting our day-to-day routine, although it is having quite a negative effect on our heating bill!  Having said that we won ten bags of coal in a craft fair raffle last month so that's going to be a bit of a relief.  BF finally collected it today so there's been a fire raging in the hearth all evening.  I plan to spend the rest of the night in front of it with a good book and a glass of my Dad's homemade sloe gin.  Bliss!

I hope you all enjoy your weekends and stay safe and warm whilst this cold snap continues.  Goodnight!

  1. Enjoy the snow! It's quite magical, isn't it? At least when it's not too much!

  2. Yes it is. Especially when you have somewhere warm and cozy to go after walking through it a while!
